QNAP TS-233 Drive Compatibility Guide (2026)

Best drives for the QNAP TS-233

With only two bays and a 24TB per-bay ceiling, drive choice on the TS-233 is about balancing capacity, cost per TB, and reliability rather than chasing extreme sizes. Here are three sensible picks from stock, covering value, balanced, and premium needs.

Which drive should you fit

What fits the TS-233

The TS-233 takes standard 3.5in SATA hard drives in both bays, and its open drive policy means you are not restricted to QNAP-branded or NAS-specific models. Everything in the compatible list above works, from the budget IronWolf 18TB through to enterprise Exos and Ultrastar drives rated for heavier duty cycles. The only hard ceiling is 24TB per bay, so even the largest drives listed here (20TB and 18TB models) fit with room to spare, giving you up to 48TB raw across two drives before RAID overhead.

There are no M.2 NVMe slots on this model, full stop. QNAP built the TS-233 as an entry-level, SATA-only NAS around a modest ARM Cortex-A55 processor, so there is no PCIe expansion, no M.2 cache option, and no way to add NVMe storage later. If you want NVMe caching or all-flash NVMe pools, you need a different QNAP model with dedicated M.2 slots, such as one from the TS-x53 or higher-tier ranges. For the TS-233, plan your storage entirely around 3.5in SATA hard drives or, if you prefer, 2.5in SATA SSDs in the same bays.
