What actually matters for Time Machine, and what doesn't

Time Machine over the network is not a demanding workload. It's a background SMB share doing incremental writes, usually overnight or whenever your Mac is idle on the same network. This means the CPU architecture, transcoding ability and even RAM ceiling of a NAS barely matter here. An ARM chip like the one in the QNAP TS-233 or UGREEN DH2300 handles Time Machine SMB traffic without breaking a sweat, because the actual bottleneck is nearly always your network link and the DAS-side speed of the drives you fit, not the NAS processor.

What does matter is quota control.
