What makes a NAS prosumer-grade

Prosumer sits between a basic home box and full business kit. The buyer wants performance and features that enthusiasts and power users appreciate: fast 10GbE networking, NVMe storage for speed, ECC memory for integrity, and the headroom to run virtual machines, containers and demanding apps. It is about capability and flexibility rather than the simplest possible setup.

10GbE is the headline feature. It transforms the experience if you edit large photo or video files directly off the NAS, where gigabit and even 2.5GbE would bottleneck you. Spend in line with how you will actually use the box. If you edit off the NAS, prioritise 10GbE and NVMe. If you mainly back up and stream, save the money: a 2.5GbE prosumer box with a sensible RAID pool will feel fast and leave budget for more capacity.
