If you still want SATA SSDs for silence or a small fast working pool, fit something like the Ediloca ES580E 4TB, around £267.99 at last check, in both bays. This is a 2-bay ARM Cortex-A55 box with 2GB RAM, no M.2 slots, 1GbE networking and no hardware transcode, so SSDs buy you quiet running and instant wake, not speed you can actually use over the network. At roughly £67 to £100 per TB, they are poor value against HDDs and this box cannot exploit SSD performance beyond a single 1GbE link anyway.

Choose SATA SSDs if

  • You want the NAS silent, with no spinning disk noise or vibration
  • You need small, fast-access storage for backups, documents or light file sync
  • The unit sits in a bedroom, office or shared space where HDD clicks are annoying

Choose CMR hard drives instead if

  • You want the lowest cost per TB for bulk photo, video or backup storage
  • You are filling both bays for capacity rather than speed
  • You care about long-term storage economics over 3 to 5 years, not noise

Why SSDs are a narrow choice on this model

The TS-233 runs an ARM Cortex-A55 quad-core with 2GB of soldered DDR4 RAM and a single 1GbE port. That network connection caps real-world transfer speed at around 110 to 120MB/s whatever drives you fit, so the 450 to 560MB/s SATA SSD speeds on the products above are never actually reached across the network. You get faster local read/write inside the NAS itself (useful for app databases or Time Machine style workloads) but not faster file copies from your PC.

There are no M.2 NVMe slots on this chassis at all, so any NVMe cache, cache pool or tiered storage advice you might see elsewhere simply does not apply here. Whatever storage you use, it goes into the two 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch bays as your only pool, formatted as Basic, JBOD, RAID0 or RAID1. There is no SHR on this model, so a two-bay RAID1 mirror is your realistic resilient option.

Given all that, SATA SSDs make sense mainly for quiet running, low power draw and eliminating HDD vibration noise, not for headline speed or value. If your priority is cost per TB for bulk storage, a pair of CMR NAS hard drives will comfortably beat any of the SSDs above and leave you with far more usable capacity for the same budget.

A word on the CPU and RAM ceiling

With only 2GB of non-expandable RAM and an entry-level ARM CPU, this NAS was never built for demanding apps, virtual machines or transcoding, and it has no hardware transcode engine for Plex or Jellyfin. Faster storage does not change any of that. If media serving with transcoding is your main goal, look at a QNAP model with an Intel CPU and quick sync instead, this one is best used for direct-play streaming, backups and file sharing.
