Why SATA SSDs make sense here, and where they do not

The DS925+'s two 2.5-inch-equivalent bays (shared with the four main bays on this model) can run entirely on SATA SSDs if you want a fully solid-state NAS. With only a quad-core AMD Ryzen V1500B and 4GB of ECC RAM as standard, the CPU is not the bottleneck for SATA SSD throughput, since even modest SATA SSDs comfortably outpace the 2.5GbE network ports. That means you are buying SSDs here for durability, heat, noise and random I/O consistency, not raw sequential speed, because the network will cap you well before the drives do.

The two M.2 NVMe slots are a separate consideration. On the DS925+ they can serve as cache or be pooled as storage, but Synology's validated-drive list applies, so stick to drives with a track record in NAS use rather than gaming laptop SSDs. If your library is mostly large sequential files (video, photos), a read cache buys you little.
