How close are they really

On paper these two drives are near twins. Both are CMR, both carry a 180 TB/year workload rating, and both ship with a 3 year warranty in their mainstream NAS trim. That matters because CMR is the recording technology you want in a RAID array, so neither drive carries the rebuild risk that haunts the cheaper SMR desktop drives. If you are filling a 2 to 4 bay box at home, you can buy either with confidence.

The differences are at the margins. Seagate leans on AgileArray for RAID tuning and adds IronWolf Health Management, which surfaces drive health data inside Synology DSM and QNAP QTS so you get early warning of trouble. WD relies on NASware firmware, which has been quietly refined over many generations and is well understood by the NAS vendors. In day to day use you will not notice the firmware. You may notice the acoustics: WD Red Plus tends to idle and seek a fraction more quietly, and runs a degree or two cooler, which can matter if the NAS lives in a bedroom or a small cupboard.

When to step up to the Pro tiers

Both ranges have a Pro variant, IronWolf Pro and WD Red Pro, that lifts the workload rating to 300 TB/year and the warranty to 5 years. The extra workload headroom only becomes relevant in busier setups: 6 bays and above, heavy multi-user access, surveillance recording, or a NAS that is hammered with backups and transcoding around the clock. For a typical home server storing photos, media and the odd backup, the standard 180 TB/year drives are comfortably within spec, and the money is usually better spent on more capacity or a small off-site cloud backup.

If you are buying four or more drives at once, it is worth mixing manufacturers or at least buying from different batches.
