What Plex needs from a NAS

Plex turns your NAS into a personal media server that streams films and shows to TVs, phones and tablets around the house and beyond. Two things decide whether it works smoothly: the processor and the number of bays. The processor handles transcoding, which is converting video on the fly when a device cannot play the original file or when bandwidth is limited. The bays decide how big your library can grow.

The key fact is that Intel chips with an integrated graphics engine, branded Quick Sync, can transcode video in hardware, including demanding 4K streams, without breaking a sweat. ARM-based NAS units lack this and struggle to transcode, so they are fine only if every device plays your files directly without conversion, which is called direct play. If you stream to a smart TV that plays anything, direct play may be enough; if you stream to phones or over the internet, you will want hardware transcoding.

How much to budget

Buy the NAS and its drives as one cost, because a media library eats space fast and the drives often cost as much as the appliance or more. The box price is for an empty enclosure, so add four large drives to plan a real Plex build.

Media pools want big, NAS-rated CMR drives. WD Red Plus, Seagate IronWolf and Toshiba N300 are all good, and for sheer capacity at the lowest price per terabyte, Seagate Exos enterprise drives are excellent for a media archive. Avoid SMR drives in RAID. You can start with a couple of large drives and expand as the library grows.

Do not overspend on the processor for Plex. A modest Intel chip with Quick Sync, like the N100, transcodes multiple streams comfortably, so the money is better put into more and larger drives. An NVMe cache can help the library and metadata feel snappier but is optional.
