What a home NAS actually does

A home NAS is a small always-on appliance with two or more drive bays that acts as your own private cloud. It backs up every computer and phone in the house, stores your photo and video library, and can stream films to the TV without a monthly subscription. The appeal for UK households is keeping family data at home rather than paying ongoing fees to a cloud provider, and getting much faster access on your own network.

The two decisions that shape everything else are bay count and processor. Bay count sets how much storage and redundancy you get: a 2-bay mirror protects against one drive failing but only gives you half the raw capacity, while a 4-bay running SHR or RAID5 loses roughly a quarter to redundancy and leaves far more usable space. The processor decides whether the box can do clever things like transcode video for Plex. Intel chips with built-in graphics handle that comfortably; cheaper ARM-based units do not.

Most families are best served by a 4-bay with an Intel processor because it covers backups, photos and media in a single device and leaves room to grow. If money is tight or you genuinely only need backups and a photo cloud, a 2-bay keeps the cost down without limiting the core features.

How much to budget

Treat the NAS and the drives as one purchase, because the drives often cost as much as the appliance itself, sometimes more. A 4-bay enclosure is the body, but it ships empty, and you choose how many drives to fit and at what capacity. Filling four bays with high-capacity NAS drives can easily double the price of the box.

Always fit NAS-rated CMR drives such as Seagate IronWolf, WD Red Plus or Toshiba N300. For larger capacities where price per terabyte matters, Seagate Exos enterprise drives are excellent value. Avoid old SMR drives like the WD Red EFAX series, which behave badly in RAID. You do not have to fill every bay on day one: many people start with two drives and add more later as the library grows.

Budget realistically for the pair. A capable 4-bay home setup with a sensible amount of redundant storage is a meaningful outlay once drives are included, but it replaces years of cloud subscriptions and keeps your data on your own network.
