What a NAS does and does not replace

A NAS replaces the costly part of iCloud: photo library storage and file storage (iCloud Drive). Your phone photos auto-back-up through the NAS app, and files sync to a folder you own.

It does not replace encrypted iOS device backups or Find My, which stay on Apple's free tier. Most people keep the free 5GB iCloud for those and move photos and files, the things that fill the paid plans, to the NAS.
