Home cloud vs cloud storage

Own-it vs subscribe, compared, with live UK device prices

Quick answer

A NAS you own gives you private, full-speed storage at home for a one-off hardware cost, and a 2TB cloud subscription at roughly 8 to 10 pounds a month pays back a NAS in about two years. Subscription cloud needs no hardware and gives effortless off-site safety, but it is a forever monthly fee and a third party holds your data. The best answer for most people is not either-or: run a NAS for the bulk of your data and keep a small cloud backup for off-site safety, following the 3-2-1 rule.

The cost and privacy trade-off

The headline difference is how you pay. A NAS is a one-off purchase: you buy the box and the drives once, and after that the storage is effectively free aside from a little electricity. Subscription cloud spreads the cost into a monthly fee you pay forever. At roughly 8 to 10 pounds a month for 2TB, a typical cloud plan adds up to around 100 to 120 pounds a year, so a modest NAS tends to pay for itself in about two years and keeps paying off after that. The more data you store, the worse the maths looks for subscriptions, because every capacity upgrade raises the monthly bill.

Privacy is the other big difference. With a NAS your files sit on hardware in your home, on your network, under your control. With a cloud service a third party holds your data, governs access to it, and can change terms or pricing. For many people that is a fair trade for convenience, but if privacy or control matters to you, owning the storage is a meaningful advantage. There is also speed: at home a NAS runs at full local network speed, while cloud is capped by your internet connection, which can make large transfers painfully slow on a typical home upload.

Why RAID is not a backup, and what 3-2-1 means

The biggest mistake NAS owners make is treating it as a backup when it is not. RAID protects against a single drive failing, it does nothing about fire, theft, flood, ransomware or accidentally deleting a folder, all of which take out the whole array. A NAS is your primary store, not your safety net. This is where cloud comes back into the picture, even for NAS owners.

The sensible rule is 3-2-1: keep three copies of your important data, on two different types of media, with one copy off-site. In practice that often means the working copy on your devices, the bulk on the NAS, and a small cloud backup of the truly irreplaceable files, your photos and documents, for the off-site copy. You do not need to back up your entire media library to the cloud. Backing up just the data you could never recreate keeps the subscription small and cheap while giving you genuine off-site protection that a NAS alone cannot.

Which approach fits you

Lean toward a home NAS if

  • You store a lot of data and want to avoid a forever monthly fee
  • You value privacy and keeping data on your own hardware
  • You want full-speed access at home for large files and media
  • You are happy to manage updates and arrange your own off-site backup

Lean toward subscription cloud if

  • You want zero hardware and zero maintenance
  • Effortless off-site safety matters more than long-term cost
  • Your data is modest and a small plan covers it cheaply
  • You move between devices and locations and want seamless sync

Frequently asked questions

Is a NAS cheaper than paying for cloud storage?

Over time, usually yes. A 2TB cloud plan at around 8 to 10 pounds a month costs roughly 100 to 120 pounds a year forever, while a NAS is a one-off purchase that tends to pay for itself in about two years. The more data you keep, the more the one-off NAS pulls ahead.

Does a NAS replace my cloud backup?

No, and this is the key point. A NAS is your primary storage, not a backup, because RAID does not protect against fire, theft, ransomware or deletion. Keep a small cloud backup of your irreplaceable files as your off-site copy alongside the NAS.

What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

Keep three copies of important data, on two different types of media, with one copy off-site. A common version is the working copy on your devices, the bulk on a NAS, and a small cloud backup of irreplaceable files providing the off-site copy.

Is my data safer on a NAS or in the cloud?

It depends on the threat. A NAS keeps data private and under your control, but you must arrange off-site protection yourself. Cloud gives effortless off-site safety but puts your data with a third party. Combining both, NAS plus a small cloud backup, is safer than either alone.

Will a NAS be faster than cloud storage?

At home, yes. A NAS runs at full local network speed, so large transfers and media streaming are quick. Cloud is limited by your internet connection, especially your upload speed, which can make big uploads and restores slow on a typical home line.
