Choosing a NAS by bay size

2-bay vs 4-bay vs 5-bay, with the best UK picks

Quick answer

Choose your bay count by your library size and how much failure protection you want, because bays drive both. A 2-bay suits backups and a personal photo cloud but loses half its raw capacity to a RAID1 mirror; a 4-bay is the popular sweet spot for Plex and a home lab, losing only about 25% to RAID5 or Synology SHR; and a 5-bay or larger suits big libraries and small business, enabling RAID6 or SHR-2 that survives two simultaneous drive failures. The more bays you have, the less of each pound you spend on redundancy.

Why bay count is the first decision

Bay count sets the ceiling on everything else: total capacity, which RAID levels you can run, how much you lose to redundancy, and how easily you can grow later. It is worth getting right first, because adding bays usually means buying a whole new appliance, whereas adding capacity within a NAS is just a matter of larger drives.

The key idea is redundancy efficiency. Protecting an array means handing some raw capacity to parity or a mirror. With few bays that overhead is a big slice of the total; with more bays the same protection spreads across more drives, so a smaller fraction is lost. A two-drive mirror gives up half its raw capacity, while one parity drive in a six-bay array costs only about a sixth.

There is also the question of how many failures you want to survive. Single-parity layouts (RAID5, SHR) tolerate one dead drive; dual-parity layouts (RAID6, SHR-2) tolerate two, which matters as arrays grow, because a second drive can fail during the hours or days a large array takes to rebuild.

How bay counts compare

Suits and redundancyUsable capacity
2-bayBackups and a personal photo cloud; RAID1 mirror, survives one drive failureAbout 50% of raw capacity usable
4-bayPlex, home lab and family storage; RAID5 or Synology SHR, survives one drive failure; the popular sweet spotAbout 75% of raw capacity usable
5-bay and largerLarge media libraries and small business; RAID6 or SHR-2, survives two drive failuresRoughly 75% to 85% usable, rising as you add bays

2-bay or step up to 4-bay

A 2-bay is enough when

  • Your main use is backups and a private photo or file cloud
  • Your library is modest and not growing fast
  • You want the smallest, quietest, cheapest box
  • You accept losing half your raw capacity to the mirror
  • You keep a separate off-site backup regardless

Go 4-bay or larger when

  • You run Plex or a home lab and want room to grow
  • You want better capacity efficiency from single parity
  • You want to add drives over time rather than replace them
  • You are eyeing 5+ bays for dual-parity protection on a big library
  • You want the flexibility of SHR with mixed drive sizes

More bays still is not a backup

Adding bays and dual parity reduces the odds of data loss from drive failure, but it does nothing against deletion, ransomware, a failed power supply or theft. Whatever the bay count, keep a separate copy following the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two media types, one off-site.

Plan drive capacity alongside bay count. Mid-tier 8TB to 14TB drives give the lowest cost per terabyte, so a 4-bay filled with mid drives is often cheaper and roomier than a 2-bay with two of the densest, most expensive drives.

Frequently asked questions

How much usable space do I actually get from each bay layout?

A 2-bay RAID1 mirror gives about 50% of raw capacity. A 4-bay on RAID5 or SHR gives about 75%. A 5-bay or larger on RAID6 or SHR-2 gives roughly 75% to 85%, with efficiency rising as you add bays, because the parity overhead spreads across more drives.

Is a 2-bay NAS enough for me?

A 2-bay is plenty if your main needs are backups and a personal photo or file cloud and your library is not growing quickly. If you run Plex, a home lab, or expect to keep adding data, a 4-bay gives more headroom and better capacity efficiency for the redundancy you pay for.

What is the difference between RAID5 and RAID6?

RAID5 uses one parity drive and survives a single drive failure, while RAID6 uses two and survives two simultaneous failures. RAID6 and Synology SHR-2 are worth it on larger arrays, where a second drive can fail during the long rebuild after the first one dies.

Can I start small and add bays later?

Not usually within one appliance, as the chassis fixes the bay count. You can add capacity by fitting larger drives, and Synology SHR lets you grow by swapping in bigger disks one at a time, but going from a 2-bay to a 4-bay generally means a new NAS.

Does more bays mean better value per terabyte?

For redundancy, yes. Spreading one parity drive across more bays means a smaller fraction of your total capacity is spent on protection, so larger arrays use each pound more efficiently than a 2-bay mirror that gives up half its raw space.
