Choose SATA SSD bays if

  • You want an all-flash or mixed pool across the 4 bays rather than tying up the M.2 slots
  • You are running RAID5 or RAID6 and want faster resilvers than hard drives give you

Why SATA SSDs suit this NAS

The F4-424 Pro's Intel Core i3-N305 is a genuinely capable 8-core chip for a 4-bay NAS, and paired with 32GB of DDR5 it can handle multiple Docker containers, a couple of VMs and hardware-transcoded Plex or Jellyfin streams without breaking a sweat. SATA SSDs in the two 2.5-inch bays give you a storage tier that will not choke on random reads the way hard drives can, which matters if you are running a database, a busy Nextcloud instance, or several containers writing small files at once.

Because TerraMaster keeps this model open to third-party drives, you are not locked into a validated compatibility list or forced to buy an inflated NAS-branded SSD. Any of the SATA SSDs above will work reliably in Basic, RAID1, RAID5, RAID6 or RAID10, and with two independent 2.5GbE ports you can even separate SSD-served traffic from hard drive traffic if you set up link aggregation or multiple VLANs.

Where SATA SSDs earn their keep here is consistency under load rather than outright speed. A single SATA SSD tops out around 550MB/s, which a 2.5GbE link cannot fully use anyway, so the real benefit is avoiding the seek-time penalties that hard drives suffer once you have several users or services hitting the array simultaneously.

One honest caveat

With only two M.2 NVMe slots and four 2.5-inch bays, you have to decide whether SSDs go in the fast NVMe slots as cache or in the SATA bays as primary storage. Do not put SATA SSDs in as cache and NVMe drives in as bulk storage, that is backwards. Use the NVMe slots for cache if you are running large hard drives, or fill all four SATA bays with SSDs if you want a genuinely fast, low-latency all-flash NAS. Trying to do both without a clear plan just wastes bays.
