We use the same maths as our RAID calculator: RAID 1 on two bays, RAID 5 on four or five, and RAID 6 on eight, after formatting overhead.
Why does the cheapest setup not use the cheapest drive?
Because cost per usable terabyte depends on both drive size and RAID overhead. Larger drives in fewer bays often lose less space to parity.
