Synology vs QNAP

DSM polish vs QNAP flexibility, with live UK prices

Quick answer

Synology wins on software polish, security record and ease of use, with DSM and Synology Hybrid RAID making it the safer pick for most home users. QNAP gives you more hardware for the money, faster networking and more expansion, but its QTS software and historical security incidents mean you must keep firmware current and never expose it directly to the internet. Choose Synology for a quiet, low-maintenance life and QNAP if you want raw capability and are comfortable managing it.

Software and ease of use

DSM is the reason most people end up with a Synology. It is the most mature NAS operating system, the layout is clean, and the first-party apps are genuinely good. Synology Photos is a credible replacement for Google Photos, Active Backup for Business will image whole PCs and servers for free, and Synology Drive handles file sync neatly. For someone who wants the NAS to fade into the background, DSM is hard to beat.

QTS is more powerful in raw terms and exposes more settings, but that also makes it busier and easier to misconfigure. QNAP bundles a lot of apps and the hardware often supports virtualisation, container workloads and hardware transcoding more readily. If you enjoy tinkering and want a platform that will not hold you back, QTS rewards the effort. If you just want photos backed up and files shared without reading a manual, DSM is the gentler road.

Hardware, RAID and security

Pound for pound, QNAP usually gives you more silicon: faster CPUs, more and faster network ports including 2.5GbE and 10GbE further down the range, HDMI out, and more M.2 NVMe slots for caching or storage. Synology tends to ship more modest CPUs and stick with 1GbE or 2.5GbE on mainstream models, and you pay a premium for the polish. Where Synology pulls ahead is flexible RAID: SHR and SHR-2 let you mix drive sizes and expand capacity gracefully, which QNAP does not offer in the same way.

Security is the other dividing line. QNAP has had several public incidents over the years involving ransomware and exploited services, which is not unique to them but has happened more visibly. The practical advice for either brand is the same: keep firmware updated, disable services you do not use, and never port-forward the NAS straight to the internet. Use the vendor relay service or a VPN for remote access. Treat QNAP with a little extra discipline here. Note also that 2025 Synology Plus models push a validated-drive list, so DSM will warn about third-party drives, although IronWolf and WD Red Plus still create standard storage pools.

Which platform fits you

Choose Synology if

  • You want the easiest, most polished software experience
  • You value SHR for mixing and expanding drive sizes
  • First-party Photos and Active Backup apps appeal to you
  • You want a set-and-forget box with a strong security record

Choose QNAP if

  • You want more CPU, ports and NVMe for the money
  • You need 10GbE or heavy virtualisation and containers
  • You are comfortable keeping firmware patched and locked down
  • You want HDMI out or more expansion than Synology offers

Best pick by use case

Use caseBest choiceWhy
Photo and file backup for a householdSynologySynology Photos and Active Backup plus DSM make it the simplest reliable choice.
Media server with hardware transcodingQNAPMore capable CPUs and HDMI out suit transcoding and a direct display.
Mixing odd-sized drives over timeSynologySHR expands and tolerates mixed capacities, which QNAP does not match.
Virtual machines and containersQNAPStronger hardware and a more open platform handle heavier workloads.
Lowest maintenance for a non-technical userSynologyPolished software and a solid security record mean less to manage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Synology or QNAP better for beginners?

Synology. DSM is the most beginner-friendly NAS operating system, and the first-party apps cover photos, backup and file sync without much setup. QNAP is more capable but assumes more from the user, so beginners tend to be happier on Synology.

Is QNAP safe to use given past security issues?

Yes, if you run it sensibly. The incidents that made headlines largely affected units exposed directly to the internet with old firmware. Keep QTS patched, disable unused services, and reach the NAS through a VPN or the vendor relay rather than port forwarding, and the risk drops sharply.

What is SHR and does QNAP have it?

SHR is Synology Hybrid RAID, which lets you combine drives of different sizes and expand capacity with less wasted space than classic RAID. QNAP does not offer an equivalent, so you are restricted to standard RAID levels that generally size to the smallest drive.

Does Synology's validated-drive list mean I must buy Synology drives?

On 2025 Plus models DSM warns when you fit third-party drives, but mainstream NAS drives like Seagate IronWolf and WD Red Plus still create standard storage pools and work normally. The warning is advisory rather than a hard block on those drives.

Which has better value hardware?

QNAP, generally. For a similar price you tend to get a faster CPU, more and quicker network ports, HDMI and more NVMe slots. With Synology you are paying a premium for DSM and the software ecosystem rather than the raw silicon.
