Against this, Synology's mainstream boxes often use more modest CPUs, DDR4, and 1GbE or 2.5GbE networking, and they command a premium. That extra horsepower is not just for show. A faster CPU helps with on-the-fly media transcoding, running containers, and handling many simultaneous users. Software and RAID: where Synology shines

Hardware is only half the story. They are stable, well documented and cover the jobs most home users actually want. UGREEN's software is improving quickly but it is younger, with fewer mature apps and a shorter track record, so you are taking a small bet that the platform keeps maturing.

Synology also offers SHR and SHR-2, which let you mix drive sizes and expand capacity gracefully. UGREEN uses classic RAID only, so you are generally tied to the smallest drive in an array and have less flexibility when growing storage later. For a buyer who plans to add odd-sized drives over time, that flexibility can matter more than raw CPU. Note that on 2025 Synology Plus models DSM pushes a validated-drive list and warns about third-party drives, although IronWolf and WD Red Plus still create standard pools.
