- WD desktop externals have usually held white-label CMR drives at larger sizes; some need the 3.3V pin workaround in older bays.
- Portable 2.5-inch drives are SMR and often USB-only boards: not suitable for a NAS.

Which external drives are worth shucking?

What is the 3.3V pin issue?
Some white-label drives from WD externals will not power up in older bays that send 3.3V on the SATA power connector. A Molex adaptor or tape over the pin fixes it.
Can I just use an external drive as my backup?
Yes, and that is often the best use of one: a second copy of your NAS that you keep unplugged. That protects you against ransomware and mistakes that RAID cannot.
