Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use Synology HAT drives in the DS925+?
Not strictly, but the DS925+ is one of the 2025 models where DSM warns about disks outside Synology's list, and support can ask you to swap them. That is why the fill table shows HAT drives beside IronWolf and Red Plus, so you can see what the policy costs.
Can the DS925+ transcode for Plex?
Not well. The Ryzen V1500B has no integrated graphics, so it relies on direct play. For Plex transcoding, an Intel unit is the better fit.
Is the DS925+ a big upgrade over the DS923+?
It adds 2.5GbE as standard and a faster CPU, but brings the stricter drive policy. If you already own compatible drives, that policy matters more than the speed bump.
How much RAM does the DS925+ need?
The 4GB of ECC is enough for file serving. Add more if you run several Synology apps, containers or virtual machines.
